Iran Art


Visual arts in Iran are so advanced and reflect Iranian ancient legends and traditions. During thousands of years arts such as pottery, painting, bronze and metal workings, stonemasonry have been practiced widely in Iranian Plateau.

Cave painting of early ages can be found in Iranian northern mountains and Zagros heights. A very impressive collection of potteries dating back to 5000 BC displayed in Tehran National museum indicates richness of pottery art in Iran. The residents of Lorestan region in western parts of Iran were aware of Bronze making technics and made outstanding artifacts decorating museums such as National Museum and Reza Abbasi Museum in Tehran.

Persian Carpet in different designs made out of wool and silk is one of the most valuable hand woven rugs in the world. Persian Garden (Paradise), Prayers niche, nomadic life, legendary figures and stories are main subjects of design in Persian carpet, decorated by symbolic motifs. The oldest carpet ever found, pazirik, shows how advanced Iranians were in weaving carpet in mid-first millennium BC.

Iranian Miniature Painting pictures many of Iranian mythological stories like tales from Shahnameh and mythical concepts for thousands of years.

Other handicrafts such as Mina-Kari, Khatam-Kari, Calligraphy and lots of other crafts show importance of art in Iranian daily life through the ages.
